No Swell, No Compromise
The Cape Courage 2026 waiting period closed on 15 September without the event being called. For eleven weeks, our surfers, safety crew, boat operators and partners were ready to go on short notice. The swell we needed never came.
Here's why we didn't run it, what happens next, and why we think this year still mattered.
The call we didn't make
Dungeons is a wave of extremes. On a normal winter day it's a lumpy, kelpy seal pit off the Sentinel. When a big, long-period groundswell from the Southern Ocean hits the Dungeons reef, it becomes one of the heaviest waves on earth. The event exists for that second version of this special place.
Before the window opened, we set a clear threshold: waves of 18 feet or bigger, holding for at least a five-hour window. That's roughly what it takes to run a full contest day in conditions that show what the reef can do. We committed publicly to holding that line.
This winter, that swell never arrived. A persistent high-pressure system over the South Atlantic kept pushing the big cold fronts south of us, so the storms that normally deliver Dungeons' best swells missed the Cape. We extended the waiting period to 15 September to give the season every chance, and we watched several promising systems fade before they reached us.
We could have run on a smaller day and still put on a show. But we invited 18 of the best big wave surfers in the country to paddle into Dungeons at its best, not an average version of it. Running on a compromise day would have short-changed them, our partners, and everyone who's waited years to see this wave back in the spotlight.
The ocean decides. This year, it said not yet.
Cape Courage 2027
We'll be back. The Cape Courage waiting period will reopen for the 2027 winter season, and we'll share dates, the invite list and ways to get involved closer to the time.
We're not starting from scratch either. The safety plan, emergency action plan, environmental management plan, permits, crew and partnerships are all built and tested on paper. Next year we can put our energy into refining them rather than creating them.
Why this year still counted
It's easy to see a waiting period that ends without an event as a failure. We don't.
For the first time since Red Bull Big Wave Africa's run at Dungeons ended in 2008, a serious, safety-led big wave contest was organised around this wave. Cape Courage has put Dungeons back in the conversation.
Local big wave surfing has a stage again. Eighteen of South Africa's best big wave surfers committed to Dungeons and kept their winters open for it. This is a homegrown event built around our own surfers and our own wave.
People noticed. Multiple news outlets, a premier TV broadcaster, an evergrowing legion of local and international fans - and some of the world's best riders - showed a keen interest in this revival. We look to build on that and cement our place in the big wave world.
The foundations are built. We now have a full water safety system around Dungeons. It includes rescue PWCs and a medical RIB, harbour ambulance cover, and land-based medics on the Sentinel saddle. Together with our permits and environmental plans, it's infrastructure that didn't exist a year ago.
The community is part of it. Working with the Hangberg community and Sentinel Ocean Alliance has been one of the most rewarding parts of the project, and those relationships carry into 2027.
Dungeons has always rewarded patience. The legendary sessions were never the ones people scheduled. They were the ones people waited for. This year was part of that wait.
